Electronic identification helps to close the range of trust services by connecting them with the participants’ identity. Because of that, many processes that take place in business or public administration can be relegated to the digital dimension and allows comfort for the users.
Electronic identification – digital “I”
In e-transactions, electronic identity is the answer to the question, “What person is it about?”. This answer avoids identity modification and posing as someone. It is based on our data contained in electronic identification modes* – it is provided for the party that needs this identification.
* Electronic identification modes – the unity which contains the data enabling identification of a given person.
Electronic identity is, in some sense, an electronic equivalent of an identity document.
Does electronic identification is enough?
In practice, the ability to recognise a given person is provided only by the combination of electronic identification and certifying, making the e-transaction more solid. Thus, before the electronic identification mode is transferred system has to authorise us – also, the party that wants to receive it must register in the system.
Electronic identification – definition
“Electronic identification” means the process of using person identification data in an electronic form uniquely representing either a natural or legal person or a natural person representing a legal person. [eIDAS art. 3]
Electronic identification is also called eID.
eIDAS and safety of electronic transactions
eIDAS’ regulation differentiates 3 levels of protection about electronic identification systems:
• low – it aims to lower the possibility for modification of identity or posing as someone
• medium – it seeks to significantly reduce the potential for modification of identity or posing as someone
• high – it aims to prevent the possibility for modification of identity or to pose as someone
This distinction comes from different requirements regarding the security level for various digital services – it is selected appropriately depending on requirements. The basic trust level for most of the services is medium-level because it gives significant credibility for identification and used technical barrier is pertinent to the risk.
